The Brain: Why Athletes Are Geniuses

Very interesting article about the differences in an athlete’s brain as compared to those not involved in sports. It also has some interesting points at the end about ethical use of a portable electrode during actual practices, now that it has been found to improve performance…

In conclusion…

Well, the school year has come to a close, and after staying up until 4:30 a.m. the other, day I managed to pull two A’s out of my last two papers in Critical thinking and Writing. Also, guess who ended up with a 4.0 for the semester…THIS GIRL!!

Something else worth mentioning, is my new double major: Psychology and Biology with an emphasis on Physiology. I declared it last week and am pretty stoked, though I do believe that this means I could very well be in school forever. The change came when I finally decided what I want to do with my life, which is going into the research field of Neuroscience. As of right now I would like to deal specifically with neurodegenerative diseases (ALS, Huntington’s, Multiple Sclerosis, etc.) and all the amazing research that is going into finding cures and better treatments. There’s a long road ahead of me, but I am super stoked (…and a little nervous :D )!

While I was in Germany one of my friends kept telling the coach that she would get up early and run with him if they could stop at every bakery they passed. Eventually he took her up on that deal, and some of us, myself included— I love carbs!— agreed to the run as well. This very well may be the most epic run that I will ever know; we ended up stopping at about 5 bakeries and running about 5 miles that morning(side note: this guy get’s up the incline in 15 min I think, and runs like 10 miles every morning, so this whole thing started as just a joke…).                                                                                                        Later that day after a morning workout we went shopping in a nearby town…a pretty successful day if you ask me!

Another picture from the same adventure. My friend and I ran all the way down to the A-frame safe house to wait for the storm to calm a bit(well, at least I was running, she may have just been power walking…). It was a long day, but pretty interesting!

This is a picture from an attempt to make it to the top of Pikes Peak out in Colorado, unfortunately we didn’t make it. A storm hit and I was too chicken shit to try and keep going (I know, terrible story for the quote I put on it)— something about the combination of being above the tree line on a mountain while lightning is striking and hale is falling just didn’t sit right with me (and i don’t think the memorial I had seen about half a mile back about someone dieing up there really helped either…)— anyhow, the first part is a quote from House that I really liked and the rest is derived from something my mother has told me on occasion.
